Do it yourself project management
When hiring a roofer, or any other contractor for that matter, always consider their so called warranty … this is the promise made to you by the contractor that they will install the materials correctly. And that the materials will perform as promised by the manufacturer.
Notice the first exclusion on the sample clipping I have included with this post. So called improper workmanship no manufacturer is going to stand behind their products if they are incorrectly, and honestly, can you blame them?
So how do you know if the contractor is installing the materials correctly. I am glad that you asked.
1. Hire me to over see the project. that’s your best option.
2. If not, then compare their proposed scope of work with the manufacturers instructions, which are usually found on their website. If the contractor has not specified the brand of materials they intend on using, you BETTER ask.
3. Go to the AZROC.GOV site and look up the Arizona Workmanship standards. Once you are sure that your contractor is compliant with the manufacturers standards, and the states workmanship standards. Then all you need to do is pay attention. Check the materials. Read the package and make sure they are NEW and what your contractor’s proposal specifies.
Make sure that when they are installing the roofing correctly (almost always found on the package FYI ), using the right fasteners and so on. Take pictures, make notes.
If you suspect a problem then address that problem with the contractor right away, don’t wait. If you wait to the last-minute correcting the problem will be much more challenging and frustrating. Remember, contractors are humans with all the same emotions as the rest of us.
So there is my little tip for the day.
